Amidst the nationwide controversy and tension rising from the upcoming presidential election, Delta Dental released a new poll that shows Santa taking the lead. While he is not running for president of the United States, the poll shows two-thirds of children believe in Santa, which trumps both the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny. His key constituency is children ages 6-12 and has outpaced the Tooth Fairy by 2%.According to the poll, 66% of children in this age range believe in Santa Claus, while only 64% believe in the Tooth Fairy. The Easter Bunny has taken third place with 48% of children believing and, according to parents, 22% of their children do not believe in any of these magical characters. Both parents and pediatric dentists in Sugar Land, Texas are thrilled with the outcome of the polls since the results of a visit from Santa Claus are typically more toys and fewer treats. But, to show they are not grinchy when it comes to treats, one pediatric dentist in Sugar Land, Texas developed some guidelines to follow for Holiday treats. These includes:

  1. Candy canes should be limited to a small, one-time treat that is not indulged in daily. The sticky treats should be rinsed well from the mouth and children (and adults) should brush after consuming.
  2. Cookies are not just for Santa! They should, however, be stored somewhere for only occasional snacks.
  3. Holiday drinks are loaded with sugar— up to 20 grams in a cup of eggnog, and 65 in a fully loaded apple cider with caramel and whipped cream. Drinks should be indulged in small servings only on occasion to save both the teeth and the waistline.
  4. While salted caramel treats, gumdrops and candied fruits appear more frequently this time of year, they are cavity-causing culprits as they stick to the surfaces of the teeth more than other sweet options.

“With the abundance of sweets available this time of year, it is especially important to spend time brushing, flossing and talking to your children about proper oral health care routines,” said Dr. Nasha Hunter, the pediatric dentist in Sugar Land, Texas responsible for the above guidelines. “While you don’t have to be a grinch about treats, moderation does play a major role in keeping your family’s smiles healthy through the holidays.”Dr. Hunter reminds her patients to keep holiday indulgences tooth friendly by eating them with meals, sticking to smaller indulgences, rinsing the mouth or chewing gum immediately following and brushing with a fluoride toothpaste as soon as possible after consumption.About Sweetpea Smiles: Sweetpea is dedicated to providing high-quality oral health care to infants, toddlers, and teens from board-certified pediatric dentists in Sugar Land, Texas.
